Correct - I just went through this with my '91 900 SE. I had a remote, but it only controlled the alarm, not the central locking. Come to find out, it was not until '92 that Saab connected the alarm brain to the central locking brain at which point, all doors were unlocked by the remote or the switch in the console. Up to that point, the central locking was controlled by the drivers side (only) door key - that door did not have a motor at all, but instead sent a signal to the central locking brain. In '92, they changed that so that the alarm brain sent the signal, and replaced the sender in the drivers door with a motor (same exact one as the passenger door - two wires instead of three).
So if you have a '92-94 convertible, the key was not made to unlock all the doors - only the remote or the switch can do that. Unless you swap in a '91 or earlier sender into the drivers side door and redo a bit of the wiring. Or just find a replacement remote.
Below is a link for a place that says they can still get the chips. The site says they are backordered, and I called and they said they can get them. I haven't ordered a set yet to see if they really can, but I did a ton of research, including calling directly to Alpine who was the original manufacturer, and this was the only place that claimed to be able to get them still. The only other option is finding someone with a matching set of chips in both the alarm brain and remote. If you need a set, let me know - I can probably find you a good matching set.
