The C900 autobox is a front-drive variation on the old Borg-Warner Type 35 and 37. I've never owned a C900 with automatic but have driven them. Ever take a Rambler with the old Nash 195.6 six-cylinder engine and the "Flash-O-Matic" tranny out for a spin on the highway? (Basically the same transmission, similar power-to weight ratio.) It's kind of like that, only worse.
With a turbo the power loss wouldn't be as bad, of course, but you'd still be missing a cog. Just to sweeten the deal, gas mileage goes in the toilet as well. When I needed an automatic transmission due to arthritis problems I bought a 9000 after decades of driving C900s.
Calling that transmission a 70s-era design is being generous. The basic design goes back to the Studebaker Automatic Drive of 1950, which was co-developed between Studebaker and Borg-Warner. The Borg-Warner Type 35 and Type 37 aluminum-case variants were used by AMC starting around 1965.
