1) autobox is 3 speeds and fragile, therefore fuel economy is fine around town for that age of car but bad on the highway... the gearing is actually not that bad for around town but needs 1 more on the highway (cruising at 3500 rpm)... if it's more than 100-150k and has never been replaced, you will probably need to expect that in your future. If the PO did regular ATF fluid changes with Ford type F only you might get more miles out of it. I think a lot of the problems people reported with fragility were care and feeding related... but even so, it still needs a 4th gear for the highway...
2) engine is the 2.1L. These came from the factory with a bad hg. Check to see when that was done (and who did it). It should have been replaced under warranty by the dealer at <30k iirc... if the original hg hung around for a long time, and especially if it had (has?) green coolant in it, there is significant risk it had (or still has) some damage to the engine - block pitting etc... that crap eats away the hg until it leaks and you lose compression... the proper hg solves this (and Mercedes coolant recommended)... but good to be aware.
As Justin says, the combination is not awe-inspiring power delivery, but if the body is really good, that is all that matters... you can swap all the rest if the price is right!
