I'm obsessive about not altering the factory methods used to build my cars, but this is one area where I think that the correct solution is to use a couple of inches of hose. Yes, I seem to recall that it is 5/16". Cut off the old plastic elbow so that its barbed section remains inside the plastic fuel line. This strengthens the fuel line for clamping. And use proper fuel line clamps, not just small hose clamps.
I see zero safety issues with this, provided you use hose made for fuel. Should the hose eventually leak, it will simply pour gasoline down rhe sides of the fuel tank and onto the ground, not into the passenger compartment.
