I'm posting here Carraig's recent announcement that he found the cause, an incorrect bulb in one of the rear clusters.
Take it away, Carraig:
"I promised to tell those who posted assistance what it was ( Justin, Land Jet, C Myles et el). Well it is solved and it was nothing to do with engine run on ( per se ) but it still was electrical as had been suggested . Back in November I had mentioned engine was running on and also that headlights would go on if break pedal was applied and for as long as it was so applied. I had said engine run on was intermittent. It turned that it was not intermittent generally but related to night time driving. What took me time to realise was that it only happened when I had the head lights on and when they were not switched off when I turned ignition off. I discovered this accidentally by turning ignition off one day and immediately the lights. I started to check lighting and discovered that on rear passenger side the dual filament bulb for rear light and stop light had incorrectly been fitted with a single filament bulb ( obviously by me ). I am not sure I could properly explain why that would lead to engine run on and headlights coming on with brakes being applied ( but have thought as to why ) but there you have it. The case of the engine run on that wasn't!"
