Hello,
Can't quite remember if there was ever any warning light in that location. But as far as belt replacement on your car the first time is sort of time consuming figuring out which tool and arm combination works best. After you've done it a number of times its pretty quick. You did not state if your car is an 8 valve or 16 valve but in the US most 87's were 16 valve. I am guessing you belt failure is with the alternator water pump pair of belts. You will want make sure it is not your crank pully coming apart. I start by moving the engine harness out of the way and slightly bending the ac line so your arms will squeeze down there. To get to those belts you will have to remove the ac belt by removing the adjuster mounted to the head. You will also have to remove the power steering belt which I normally do by loosening the adjuster slightly then removing the bolts that hold the adjuster on to the block and the nut that goes to a short carraige type bolt on the motor mount bracket I usually hold my right hand finger on the back of the bolt and take off the nut then try to catch the bolt with my fingers. Since your alternator/water pump belts are missing you can now go over and remove the adjuster for the alternator I take out the through bolt completely so I can swivel it over further to get the belts on. Getting the pair of belts on can be a little tricky I usually try to get both of them on the crank pulley then get the inner one on the alternator then the water pump. Then I repeat with the second one. Put the alternator adjuster back in and adjust the tension. Put the power steering belt on by looping it on the crank pulley and the power steering pulley then install the carraige type bolt then the other bolt then adjust its tension. Then I install the adjuster for the ac belt with the pivot bolt only and place the belt on it then adjuster bolt. Then after adjusting it MAKE SURE TO PUT THE WIRING HARNESS BACK SO THAT IT WON'T CONTACT THE BELTS. Hope this helps and post any other problems you run into. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive.
