The early trans used a solid front mount. The 88 should have a hydraulic front mount. I've had to change out quite a few front hydraulic mounts. If it was me i'd go with the front solid mount. If you decide to change front covers your 88 box might have a 5th gear support bearing in the chain cover. Not a big deal but if you use that cover there is something in the 84 cover that might need to be switched where the bearing goes. Also look at the last number of the trans model on the I'D. plate. If the number ends in 6 the trans has the lower geared chain sprockets. If it ends in 7 then it is geared for lower rpms on the highway. Not too hard to switch chain sprockets. You'll need a pair of medium tip straight external snap ring pliers. For the shifter you'll need the shift rod that goes from the console thru the firewall. It has the cam that meshes with the spring roller mechanism mounted to the console. Check the firewall boot too. Might need a new one of those.
