Thought this deserved it's own thread due to the increasing amount of c900s out there advertized for $10k or more, but the pics are taken in the dark from a cellphone camera with the hood open and tools on the ground around it. *Facepalm*. Feel free to add your piece - I think we can all benefit from the observations of others in increasing the value of all of our cars as others sell for higher.
How to take proper photos to sell your car:
- Use a real camera and take pictures of your actual car in its current state. DO NOT use old pictures that are no longer accurate (i.e. from the month before the accident).
- Clean your car first, let it (and the ground around it) dry and move the hose and cleaning equipment out of view.
- Drive to a nice picture spot (so people do not see the oil stains and rusted-off parts where your car has sat for the past 8 years outside). Might consider driving to a nice neighborhood or a friend's garage if your house is trashed (if your pictures show that you don't keep up your house, they also imply that you don't keep up your car).
- Before you take any pictures, make sure that you have not left the hood open, the doors open, the gas filler gun in the gas tank, personal items on the dash, floor, or seats (people want to envision THEIR car, not YOUR car, so take your socks, hair-things, unpaid bills, pets, children, and bumper stickers off and out of the car first) or any tools on or around the car.
- Pictures should show it ready and eager to start its new life with its new owner, so be sure you don't post old good-time pictures of you sleeping with your old girlfriend in the back or hauling that deer that you shot last season. No one really wants to know what you did in the car before they bought it.
- Take two kinds of pictures - inspirational pictures to show off the beauty of the car and draw people in, and informational pictures to show every side, angle, and problem area. The person is going to see it all eventually anyway, so the more pics up front, the better. Price and describe accordingly to avoid wasting time later. TAKE LOTS OF PICTURES!
- It helps to take pictures when it is cloudy, dusk, or shaded. Direct sunlight pictures rarely accurately show the color and condition of the car.
- Pictures that I consider red flags include obvious avoidance of typical problem areas (like pictures of the passenger seat and not the drivers seat, mentioning damage and not showing it - or vice versa), obvious work being or recently done to the car, evidence of mice, important parts missing or on the ground next to the car (like the transmission), or no pictures at all.
- Remember, pictures are the MOST POWERFUL selling point. YOU NEED TO PUT SOME EFFORT INTO THEM IF YOU WANT TO SELL YOUR CAR FOR A LOT OF MONEY! And we all want you to sell your car for a lot of money because that means the value of all of ours goes up. Not including pictures (even if you do mention that you will send pictures on request) is an automatic red flag. So do it and do it right.
The attached pic is one that I consider successful - the car sold for $6300 in a short amount of time. Even with the stupid trash can in the background (it snuck in there).
