As you can see from the chart attached in the previous post voltage is very temperature dependent. My point was that if you measured less than 12 volts that the battery was almost certainly bad.
If you go strictly with 12.7 volts as a full state of charge, then at a temperature of 40 degrees F then you would be scrapping a perfectly fine battery.
However, I must disagree with the statement that if the battery is below 12 volts that it would not start the car. That is not true. Normally the voltage of the battery will drop to 11.5 volts or so just after starting the car, just look at the voltage monitor on the dash.
Going by your statement the car would not immediately restart until you charged the battery. That of course is not the case. Generally below 10 volts or so is where the engine will most likely not crank over fast enough, or at all.
The aforementioned chart is very good, thanks for posting it. Very useful.
