OK, so the obvious is overlooked most of the time......there was a screw missing from the vacuum servo on the side of the distributor.....it would allow the timing to cycle + / - 2-3 degrees causing the lumpy idle.
A few other corrections to plug gap, and a new dizzy cap, then fired it up for the first time without the lumpiness. As usual, it's more than just one thing that goes wrong or bad with these cars :-)
