Having just been in my 88 Spg engine, one thing to check would be to make sure the oilers on the head are free and clear. The earlier heads have these-not sure when Saab switched. Easy to pop off valve cover and remove the tubes and check for debris. If there is something in there restricting flow, it could reduce the flow of oil. Found some pieces of red rtv jammed in mine. Pretty quiet now. Of course I was doing way more drastic stuff chasing another problem. Certainly worth putting an oil pressure gage on it to verify oil pressure at the housing.
Warning: the oiler tubes do have an orientation and timing with the holes so do pay utmost attention.
Warning 2: the fittings are plastic and could crack/snap or disintegrate upon removal so it would not hurt to preorder a kit from a site sponsor just in case
Maybe I misread, but I thought the timing chain tensioner is mechanical, being a spring loaded device?
Good luck and take care,
Nate
