The gauges are like $60. Not too bad. You may be able to rent such things from an Autozone or O'Reillys whatever, too. Never tried!
The drips could be anything from sealant to oil to dye to compressed gas that hasn't evaporated yet. My guess is probably oil - IIRC the ES stuff comes with oil in the cans.
Leaks can be VERY slow - my Tahoe would take about two weeks to leak down to the point the compressor wouldn't engage anymore, though as RogerD pointed out somewhere else the leak on a Saab tend to be on that manifold hose directly off the compressor, and it tends to be quick (at least, IME). It might only leak under vibration or pressure. But whatever - ES isn't that expensive and isn't R12 bad for the environment, so if it leaks out you know you've got something to deal with. That's gonna be my approach with the motorhome, too. (Admittedly, I don't feel too good about it, either)
