Once you have the door down far enough to get to the regulator, you've gone as far as you can with the door structure.
I replaced the driver's side window motor on my '89 a few weeks ago.
Your best option at this point to get the motor out is to unbolt the regulator and move it enough to provide clearance.
In order to work it around enough to get sufficient clearance to get the motor out, I ended up remove the window by unbolting it from the C rail that the regulator pushes up and down, turning it 90 degrees, and gently working it out through the opening. I also had to pull the inner weatherstrip so the window wouldn't rip up the outer weatherstrip.
Re-installation is a little tricky, but it's doable by most people on the C900 board.
FWIW, if both windows don't work, my first suspicion would be corrosion on one of the pins in the top bulkhead connector. BTDT. When one of the windows decides to not go up again (especially when it starts raining), I park the car, kneel on the ground, reach up behind the knee bolster, grab that connector, and wiggle it. That's enough to restore conductivity.
