here's a link to a picture of a generic A/C system. I think the high pressure side just about always goes to the condenser (in front of the radiator).
And yes, you don't want to connect the refrigerant can to the high side. However, if you look at the bottom of the can, you should see notches (for lack of a better descriptor) that are suppose to fail allowing the can to fail rather than become a missile). Hope this helps
