Cracks in 90's Fuel Tanks-Looser Straps ? Posted by Roger D [Email] (#1121) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Roger D) on Thu, 30 Oct 2014 13:20:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I've had to deal with 5 cracked fuel tanks on 90's cars. And seen a couple friends go thru the problem also. Most recent for me was on a cross country trip last month. I was about 700 miles into the trip when I filled up in Western Wyoming. Moved the car behind the station and went inside to graze. Came out and smelled gas as I approached the car. Looked under and could see drops of gas running down the forward surface of the tank. Picked up a used tank in Iowa and installed it when I got to the east coast. Today I was changing the fuel filter on my recently acquired 91T. I looked up at the tank straps and noticed a 3/8" gap between the base of the threaded shaft and the body brackets. Is running with loose straps a recommended way to protect the longevity of the tank?
