If you can get the pin into the gearbox selector shaft/diff cover, and the pin in the shifter box simultaneously in third gear selection, by all means DO NOT loosen the shift coupling as it wouldn't do anything to help.
It was the APU ( auxiliary power unit ) inside the B-29 that caught on fire -- a Briggs & Stratton type device being used to warm up the aircraft as they were trying to get it ready for flight. It had been pulled out onto the frozen lake/water surface, for flight, so when it burned, the hull ended up dropping into the cold water after the frozen surface melted in the season....they had to have a surface to fly the metal out of and the frozen surface was the answer.
If I recall, it was the original APU they were using that sprung a leak....not one they brought with them.....vibrated off the mount and made a fuel leak that ended up in the destruction of the hull. Let's go get the engines......bring a wetsuit.
Soon, there will be two flying B29s as one in Wichita is coming back to life -- it's name is Doc after one of the 7 drawfs. I was inside the aircraft several years ago, and it was virtually in new condition. Should be a stunning addition to airshows when they get it all finished.
