Yeah 1/4" anything is usually gonna be too big, don't recall ever recommending that (but then I did a lot of drugs in the sixties). I've successfully used 4 gauge solid copper wire. One problem is that different brands of clutch covers require slightly different width spacers I think. Sometimes you just have to experiment with different materials to find the one that fits right. I've also had success with a choke cable housing and a spark plug cable.
An approach that is really cool but has one drawback is to;
1) Remove three of the clutch cover bolts at 120 degrees and loosen the others
2) One by One replace the three remaining bolts with longer bolts (8 x1.25 mm) but only just start them in the flywheel
3) One at a time pry the clutch cover back, unscrew the bolt and install a nut between the clutch cover and the flywheel. Hold the nut with a wrench and screw the bolt in until it's well started in the flywheel.
4) Hold a bolt with a wrench and turn the nut so that it pushes the clutch cover away from the flywheel and then go to the next bolt and do the same.
5) Continue running the nuts back on the bolts and spreading the cover and flywheel until you can get a tool placed in the cover.
Works great BUT due to the length of the bolts you can't rotate the flywheel because the bolts will hit on the transmission housing. Because of that the process is a little tricky but totally do-able (I've done it a lot) and allows you insert any tool you have. Always have at least two bolts screwed into the flywheel at any time until the tool is inserted or the cover can go off center and create a nightmare for you.
Your video shows pretty good and normal travel I'd say but the fact that bleeding gives you good pedal that craps out overnight means that there is a major leak in the system somewhere.
