Your point of comparison is a 30 year old car from an era where safety was not much of a consideration for most manufacturers, so SAAB could do things differently and find alternative solutions to build a genuinely safe, interesting and practical car. New cars need to meet pedestrian safety standards etc, which necessitates high belt lines. Keep driving the ones you have as long as you can!
That said, there are various cars that are fun to drive and unique. They will not be completely like a c900. Actually, your best bet for that would be to look at newer SAABs but they still don't drive like a c900 - just more familiar characteristics than other brands. You also didn't mention your size/needs etc or your budget. Just about any car nowadays can get c900 fuel economy, even many SUVs. Do you drive in snow?
A few to consider:
Mini. Unique, fun to drive, pita to repair, but they have some of the c900 qualities.
Volvo C30. Again, unique, Swedish - will have some familiarity ergonomically, I think out of production though.
In the small car vein, the little Fiat might appeal. Never drove one, but I see some local SAAB folks have picked them up. There is a souped up version, maybe with a turbo? Windshield does not wrap, but it is unique.
I'd seriously take a 9-5 or late 9-3SC out for a test drive if you are ok with used cars from a dead manufacturer. The latest 9-3's were good cars that still retained some of the SAAB qualities we know and love. Not the same, but good practical cars - if you have a SAAB indy who can repair them.
Porsche 911 or Cayman. To me, the SPG is like a utility grade 911. It is a brilliant car. 911 will cost a fortune more to own, not FWD (but can be AWD) but will be fun to drive. I suspect the fuel economy would be highly "driver specific"! ha!
BMW 4 GT looks interesting if you want a hatch. With a turbo and awd (if/when this is available), this looks like a great option for SAAB hatch folks... except for the badge, and the cost, and the ergonomics are not the same (though probably good, just different).
Alfa is bringing the 4C or whatever to North America.
Koenigsegg One:1. Ha! It does have a wrap around windshield, and it is Swedish.
I'll stop there.
Why not just hoard c900's? They're great!
