where fuel power is the product of P x V (pressure multiplied by volume) of the fuel flow.
Jamie,
if you've got a live (up-to-spec) fuel pressure on an idling engine then it does not mean that the fuel pressure is with-in the specs at load. Those systems run (or better say: rely) on a constant differential fuel pressure which is why the fuel pressure regulator is driven by that very pressure hose (which many mistakenly call 'vacuum line') running from the intake manifold.
In other words: if you've got a proper differential pressure in the fuel rail on an idling engine then it doesn't mean it is still proper under load. If you've got a bad pump (whenever a NEW or OLD one, just BAD) or clogged main fuel line or significant voltage drop on the way to the fuel pump motor (good point, Freak!), then the fuel supplied to injectors when the engine is under load is different (read: less) then expected by the ECU and available timing (injector timing) margin.
