Zig, your engineering acumen is amazing.
Not as interesting as your stories, but I had a lower a-arm fail in two different SPGs in the same year. Both were eventful. One failed on a curving 55 mph freeway exit to another freeway in the city. Was able to control it and get it to a very narrow shoulder through traffic. Was amazed when I got out and the wheel was turned 90 degrees. The second was on my rust free 120k SPG on a straight highway about a quarter mile after a curve (if that makes any difference). Had my hand lightly on the wheel and it failed without notice. This time I knew what happened but it still caught me by surprise. The car jerked to the left (thank God the highway was empty) and again I was able to muscle it over to the shoulder. Moral of the story: check your lower A-arms somewhat frequently! And don't think since a car is "low miles" and rust free that the A-arm won't crack. Or better yet, beef them up by welding or purchasing a beefed up pair.
