You don't need a special edition car to enjoy the Saab c900 experience. Just find one in the best shape you can afford. Even with that, expect to have to periodically fix things on the car, they are not getting any younger. You can always add performance or appearance upgrades.
I maintain the Commemorative Edition Registry, so I'm biased toward that model. I have been driving c900s for years, and never had an issue with the ABS or airbag--maybe I'm just the luckiest guy in the world. I did have an '89 vert for a while, I like the later cars better myself. Admittedly, the '89 I had was not well taken care of by its POs. My daily driver is a 1993 900T vert that has been brought up to Commemorative Edition specs. The 5-piece spoiler on the later cars gives them a better look on my opinion. Power and heated seats (when they work) are a nice plus. The later Mitsubishi turbo is superior to the laggy Garrett on the earlier cars.
Be careful when purchasing a SiS or SE for a premium price. They are easily faked. To the best of my knowledge, nooone has ever compiled a definitive VIN list for those cars (the Comm Eds can be confirmed by the VIN). Unless the car you are looking at is in amazing condition, or the seller has indisputable proof that the car is legit, don't pay a premium price. A 91 vert with 32K miles just sold this week for $20,500. It was sold as an SE, I have my doubts. The car had badging and the wrong color interior. Despite that, it was a beauty!
