+1 to what the other posters said - the heavy-gauge ground wire from the block (which grounds the starter) to the body (which I presume grounds the battery) is missing/corroded/has a poor contact. The wires are getting hot because the starter is able to conduct current well and so you are seeing many amps conducting through small wires. Those wires are now trying to glow like toaster wires.
To quickly diagnose, get your jumper cables and clamp one end of one of the cables (black or red) to the block in a place with bare metal (such as the throttle body stay). Do the same with the other end of the same colored cable to a bare-metal portion of the body.
Now the starter will likely turn over well. If it does, that proves that the wire between the block and body is poor and will need to be improved.
I'll leave it up to the pros where that wire runs to and from -
Note that any other grounding wires that are connected to the head (such as the fuel injection wiring - you'll need to dive into the prints in Bentley) could now been similarly heated.
