After much research, I solved the problem of acceleration when setting cruise control.
Apparently, my car (1990) had a pre-1988 cruise switch installed in it.
Searching forums, trying to understand wiring diagrams, and experimentation led me to the solution:
I connected the yellow wire from the switch to the green wire to the CC controller. I connected the green wire from the switch to the yellow to the controller. Brown and red stayed the same.
Now all functions operate as they should. Set sets the speed as it should, depressing and holding causes acceleration and sets a new higher speed, resume goes to last set speed, and off and on of course work.
