a/c recharge - compressor smoking

Hi. The a/c on my 88 900tc wasn't been working for a while. It had been converted years back, worked well, and as it sits a lot, has recently been blowing hot. I bought a can of A/C Pro, figuring I'd give a shot to charging it. With the car running, I turned the compressor on. The clutch engaged and it spun nicely. I connected the can and filled it to the maximum PSI in the "green" zone on the gauge. Seemed to be pressurized and holding.
After a few minutes I noticed it wasn't blowing particularly cold. Then I noticed a touch of smoke by the belt of the compressor. It looked like the clutch was spinning, but slower than than the speed of the belt (explaining the smoking). Disengaging the a/c and it stopped.
If the compressor didn't spin at all initially, I'd assume it was seized. But from what happened I assume it's not spinning well enough. My guess is the compressor is shot, and I'll likely just live without a/c. But I just wanted to check before giving up on the outside chance there was something I was missing - like it's overcharged, I need to add a/c oil, etc.
Many thanks,
Brian
