You need a full gauge set Posted by JerseySaab [Email] (#666) [Profile/Gallery] (more from JerseySaab) on Fri, 22 Jul 2016 19:01:20 In Reply to: a/c recharge - compressor smoking, brian, Fri, 22 Jul 2016 10:26:26 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The cheap low-side gauge on those "A/C Pro" cans doesn't give you enough information to work with, you need to see what the high-side pressure is. I think those also contain sealer which can cause problems.
I had a compressor lock up on me like that on a 100 degree day on an old AMC Ambassador years ago while on a trip. The head pressure skyrocketed, the compressor locked, and the AC belt shredded. A teardown of the compressor later revealed no mechanical issues, it was just a matter of the condenser not being able to shed heat fast enough.
For a quick check, once everything has cooled down you should be able to turn the compressor over by hand and it should turn smoothly without binding. If it's still locked up then it's toast.
