My Rube device is a length of bar stock long enough to span the ring with two shorter pieces clamped with vise grips to create a 'U' that fits the nubs on the ring. You can apply plenty of pressure on both sides at once by using the vise grips as handles. I have heard that you can make a tool by taking a short length of plastic pipe the correct diameter and cutting a couple slots for the nubs and a couple holes on opposite sides to place a bar or long screwdriver(s) through to turn it.
Alternate tapping on the nubs with a drift and hammer sometimes works but the nubs break off easily...
