Unless you want to do a lot of fiddly work, and I mean a lot, you can't keep the equalizer and the separate amp in the mix. The connector lets the new radio run the speakers directly but that is all. Get a good radio with decent output and you will not see much difference. Modern radios are far more capable than the old stuff and mine has a ton of equalizer setting and different effects so I really don't see any loss. Actually it sounds better overall. And the ability to interface with a smart phone or iPod makes it all the more better. I used to have a CD changer in the trunk and had to get out of the car and into the trunk and switch out CDs. Now I have a music service through my phone hooked to the radio and can access literally almost any recording in history in about ten seconds. Swap out the old unit with a modern one and don't look back!!
