According to the Bentley manual if the system was opened you have to add oil to replace the freon that was dissolve in it. I usually add 2 oz.
If you are using R12 you should only use Mineral Oil. Ester oil is not dissolved by r12 and is not circulated with it. It get deposited in the Evaporator and condenser creating an insulating layer that reduce the efficiency. When converting to R134a most of the mineral oil has to be removed. R134a dissolve the ester oil but not the mineral oil that would pool in the system creating sludge and reduced efficiency.
