There are only a handful of companies that actually make batteries anymore - Johnson Controls, Exide, and East Penn is probably about 90% of the market. Maybe more. These guys make batteries to spec and sell them to distributors and retailers who slap different names on them - your Autozone Duralast battery from 2012 could be a Johnson while in 2018 it might be an Exide. And Autozone may change the spec to suit different marketing needs as well. Because of these shifts, anecdotal evidence about what someone has had good luck with for the last 2-3 year may not be representative of the current state of things. Makes this decision tough.
My approach is largely to buy based on a happy intersection of cost and warranty. I know I can't control the quality of the battery, but at least I know my Duralast Gold is not my problem for the next six years.
If your car sits a lot, I would probably invest in an AC trickle charger or, failing availability of an AC outlet, a solar panel. Continual low charges are very bad for batteries, and starting cars with low batteries is hard on alternators. My Viggen sits idle 90% of the time and I leave it on a Noco G1100 trickle charger pretty much 24x7 (I ran a plug under the bumper for easy hookup!)…. even with a VERY marginal Interstate battery it gets me through my day reliably. :)
