All ears on this one... my '85 SPG recently started losing some oil into the exhaust, and I haven't figured out where it's coming from. Over the summer I replaced the turbo with a low-miles but accident-survivor Super60 that was fine for a couple months. Then I replaced the valve cover and PCV hoses and started getting the oily smoke. I really think it's the turbo as the intake plumbing is clean, but I can't help but wonder why it showed up coincidentally with the PCV work. Either route is a big PITA and lots of dollars.... I don't want to choose the wrong one!
My specific symptom is driving -> long idle or coast -> oil smell. I've never seen anything in the rear view. It doesn't seem to happen during heavy acceleration or sitting forever at idle. Only following a transition from more throttle to less throttle. Really annoying!
I will probably pull the plugs, but given the infrequency and short burns, I doubt I'd find anything even if it was in the combustion chambers. :(
