I know that I'll pick up a CIS pressure test set-up for certain at some point soon. At this point I needed to see if this engine was going to respond to resuscitation. With all the weird solidified stuff in the gas tank and how many solid crumbs were throughout the whole fuel system combined with the massive amounts of smoke I started to think that maybe someone had sabotaged the fuel and possibly the cylinder walls or rings were shot.
But now I know that that's not the case. I just got back from a shake down cruise the full 4 miles to the other side of the island. I can't 'technically' go over 20mph here on our roads// but let's say it 'may' or 'may not' handle 30 mph just fine.
Over lunch I split time between a grilled cheese and the original FD reassembly. I had already soaked and cleaned it but never got a rebuild kit for it / either way, today I decided to put it back together 'as is' and see what would happen.
Now ...all 4 injectors are visually similar in spray and would shut off when the air meter plate returned to zero. I futzed with the mix screw (sans dwell) and seem to have it running pretty happily. So after letting it warm up for about twenty minutes I drove it as far as the road would allow then came home.
It is running warm, but I'm thinking the radiator must be partially blocked after sitting for so long.
One main goal was to get it running decent, assess the situation, then if the car seems good I would drive it to a local Saab tech we have nearby on the mainland for it to be truly dialed in. I know the idle when warm still needs some work // but for now it's pretty exciting to get this car living with a heart beat again.
BTW, Landjet, you were 100% correct about the fuel accumulator, it looked nice and fine but when it was asked to work it dripped gas and lost pressure. Thank goodness I had paid attention to your advice and pre-purchased the replacement and had it ready to go.
