I may be completely off base on this, but if you had a catalytic converter issue with the car, it may have become so hot that it melted wiring above it. I corrected wiring issues with a car that had similar issues, brake light, fuel level ( all wires that go to the back of the car ). The wiring had become so hot that the insulation melted within the plastic cradle that houses the harness going to the back of the car directly above the cat.
This was a car that I did a 5 speed conversion on and discovered the wiring problem when the console was out to put in the shift rod. So, it isn't easy to see it, you have to hunt this one down, it might be a last resort if can't solve the issue in other ways. I got the car with a dead automatic, so none of these problems were evident prior to ownership. I have a photo of the melted wires in my photo gallery.
