I had to go check for myself with my 80's era dwell meter and I did indeed get an accurate RPM reading on my 1993 Turbo. It also works on my 1978 99 EMS, with electronic ignition. I don't even see how the fuel injection type matters for this. The analog dwell/RPM meter is a frequency counter for the coil charge/discharge cycle.
I'd be very interested to see what the harbor freight unit you tried is doing, just out of morbid curiosity. Can you please tell me the model number you got? Maybe I can figure out a hack to make it work for you. Maybe it's a signal strength issue...
