I just received this unit and I can confirm I get an accurate RPM reading on my 1993 Turbo. The accompanying instructions include a generalized booklet that covers a variety of their models -- not just this "automotive" version, and really only describes the device's range of abilities, with no actual instructions on operation. The extra sheet titled "Signal Pick Up" (attached to this post) for the inductive pickup clamp shows that this is the method they expect you to use to measure tach and dwell angle. You must clamp to the secondary winding on the coil (the high voltage/spark side) -- that is the wire between the coil and the center of the distributor cap. Of course if one clamps any of the spark plug wires you'll need to multiply by four. The value read from the meter must be multiplied by 10 for actual RPM. That is, a reading of 90 is actually 900 RPM. Nowhere in the instructions is this explained. I am getting accurate RPM readings when compared to the in-dash tach at all my sampling rates. This instruction sheet also says in note #2, "The distance between the spark plug and the clamp of the unit must be less than 10cm during test." What is that about? Maybe they mean NO CLOSER THAN 10cm? Pretty bad.
This meter is very slow. It takes a few seconds when measuring voltage for it to settle in on its reading. It's just what we should expect with an inexpensive meter. Otherwise it seems actually quite accurate. I'll be using it to work on cars, allowing me to keep my more expensive precision meter in the house on the workbench.
There are a some reviews on youtube for this meter. uxwbill "Product Review: Cen-Tech 95670/All-Sun EM129 Multimeter with Engine Analyzer" says the 9V battery that came with his unit was bad. joe smith "The CENTECH 95670, EOSUN EM129 Automotive Meter" is a good review on the meter's accuracy, and shows how the meter can be used without the induction pickup.
This meter won't be useful for the 9-3 with its cassette ignition system. Maybe there's another way to tap into the ignition system, I don't know.
