Any problem in the LH system on your 900 can probably be solved much easier than switching to carburetors.
By "solid fuel injection system," I'm referring to gathering the parts off any equivalent-year junked Saab 900 that you can access if your current system is showing too many failures in multiple locations. There are Saab salvage operations operating around the country who could probably assemble a complete replacement system if you wanted.
But I'll bet any problems in yours can be isolated to one or just a handful of parts. And these parts are easier to find and replace than what you may be facing with a carburetor conversion/expedition. Find a specialist; someone like Bernie could probably identify and solve your injection issues in very short order. What's your time worth?
If I had the time and money (and driveway space), I'd like to purchase one of the occasional near-mint-condition 96s that I might see for sale in the Los Angeles region. Carburetors on these model-96 cars = fine. Trying to slap a carburetor on a 16v engine = galactic frustration and time-sink. AND...California simply won't allow that type of modification to a street-car anyway. Emissions are very strict in this state and enforced upon all cars going back to 1975 (I think).
I'm in Los Angeles and no longer see any 900s on the road. Maybe 2 in the last year of routine 5-day-workweek commuting.
But I'm going to stick it out as long as I can because the 900s are well-built, fun to drive and the hatchbacks are a Swiss-army-knife automobile.
