Awakening a barn find: engine starts, but jackhammering noise?

After a pretty thorough refurbishment of a '94 C900 convertible that has been sitting for a while, I've managed to get it started, only to be greeted with a steady jackhammering sound from the engine as it settles into an idle. Because of the noise I haven't dared run it for a few seconds, much less move it, though the idle is fairly smooth and the engine isn't noticeably shaking or smoking. It has new oil, plugs (proper BCPR7ES and gapped to 0.024"), cap/rotor and all wires, fresh gas, fuel pump, filter, and injectors, along with new water pump, alternator, and their corresponding belts, and clutch system (clutch kit, slave and master cylinders, and clutch hose). I haven't touched the timing chain or tensioner though, and probably ought to get a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint the sound. Is this something normal when waking up an engine that's been sitting, or should I get it to a professional and prepare for the worst?
