1983 BMW - The Dark Side? (non-SAAB)

I've been tempted by The Dark Side and I need some advice. I have been offered a BMW for next to nothing. It's a 1983 528i. Car is absolutely immaculate, metallic-grey with cream interior, always garaged, washed, waxed and vacuumed. No rust, no dents, shiny paint. 175K on the odo, the engine runs like a top. It has every option, leather, sunroof, power - really an excellent example. The problem is the 5-speed transmission is broken. It drives, but first and third gear are AWOL.
I've always liked these early 80's beemers, I dont know why, something about the style that is so...Bavarian! So what am I getting into here? I've replaced SAAB engines and transmissions before - can I do this? What is involved in swapping a BMW trans? Will you guys ever speak to me again if I buy a beemer? Should I meditate or something to rid myself of this temptation?
