Knocking Lifter problem??

Hi,
I have a 1994 Saab 900 convertible with 80,000 miles. It has developed a very loud knocking from around the cylinder heads. (Before you ask, it has not run out of oil, which is changed regularly every 3-5000 miles). The local Saab specialist believes the noise is coming from the hydraulic lifters. Apparently, the noise is coming from both cylinder heads, so the oil supply to the lifters is suspect. The mechanics have tried flushing the oil system with a mix of 4 parts engine, one part transmission oil, and running the engine to clear the blockage, but with no luck. They now have no suggestions other than a new engine. Can anyone come up with a lower cost solution to save this fine car being relegated to the scrap heap due to the high cost of a replacement engine?
P.S. I also have a 1995 stick shift Aero, which is unbelievable to drive, but started suffering reliability problems around 60,000 miles. Nice car, shame about the reliability.
Many thanks, John B
