Burns 1L oil/800 km, what about an additive?

I have an 88 900S with about 255,000 km. It burns about 1L of oil (nonsynthetic) every 800 km. There are no obvious oil leaks. I've been told that the only fix would be an engine rebuild. Has anyone tried a product like "Engine Restore" to reduce oil consumption? Is it safe? Does it work? For how long? TIA.
