You're talking about the tool that bentley and Haynes show for keeping the shift linkage in 3rd?
I followed the advice from the Townsend Imports page: Shift the transmission into 3rd and, when you're making the adjustment (assuming that you have a drill bit in the alignment hole) keep the transmission end of the linkage pulled back.
It worked well for me. The biggest problem I had was loosening the pinch bolt on the linkage. Use *lots* of PB Blaster or other rust penetrant.
