I had an '86 8-valve, and used a buddy's '85 8-valve for a week or so. They both had the normal SAAB strengths, but they were slow off the line. They would both cruise at 75 all day long, though. My friend's '85 rode smoothly and was a great car.
16-valve non-turbos are stronger off the line and accelerate faster overall.
They aren't nearly as hard on the transmissions as 16-valve N/A and Turbos, though.
You may not be pleased with the performance, so take that into consideration. They also have some problems with cracked heads.
I'd have to agree with Bryce. My '86 would have gone a lot further than 207k miles if it hadn't been hit by a lady that ran a red light.
