I too have often had similar thoughts!! The 1854cc engine used in early 99s was a Triumph / Ricardo lump and is the same as the one used in the 1850 Dolomite. This in turn is the same block as the Sprint engine. The gearbox on these early 99s (and the 1709cc forerunner) is a strengthened 1300 Dolomite box.
The 'problems' arise when Saab reworked the 1850 engine into the 2l B20, which is the forerunner of all Saab 2l and 2.3l engines in the 900 and 9000. Y'see, those clever people at Saab lenghtened the block to give more space between the bores (hence more strength) and redesigned the mounting of the head to do away with those troublesome angled head bolts that plague Dolomite owners. The upshot of this is that you can't fit a sprint head to a 900 and you can't fit a Sprint engine to a 900 gearbox. However, you could in theory fit a Sprint head or engine to a pre-'72 1854 99. You could I suppose fit the Sprint or TR7 lump in a 900 but you'd need the donor gearboxes too, which may or may not fit!!!
Saab did build some prototype 99s with the Stag V8 installed (the Stag V8 is basically the 1854cc slant 4 with an extra bank of cylinders attached) but gave up on the idea when they discovered the turbo.
A V8 99/900 would be very nice and not impossible. Since Stag owners often fitted the Rover (Buick) V8 in 3.5l form (due to it's improved reliability and power) this should in theory be fittable to the 900. One day maybe.....
