Voltage is key here. When alternator is charging a battery (load) the regulator will limit the voltage to the load. A properly operating charging source ( your alternator or your friends car alternator ) will limit this voltage. When cranking, the voltage can only drop under the heavy load. Your ECU is only sensitive to a higher than normal voltage, Hence a dead or failing battery will only cause the ECU to stop doing it's job until the voltage comes back to normal. The SAAB ECU will stop doing it's job when the voltage drops too low, so will your ignition coil. If you connect a charging source to your car in reverse, without your battery installed, you may fry your own cars alternator and electronic components.
ECU's will fail for many reasons, failure due to proper jump starting is unlikely.
