Can't say I hurt anything, but not sure it did anything either. Was trying to make a difference in 'pinging' on both cars ( from the assumed carbon build up ).
Locate a vacuum line near the throttle body and install a small diameter length of tubing. Put a short section of wood like bamboo in the other end that dips into your water bottle. Stick a pin through the bamboo to make the right 'orifice' (experiment)
With the engine idling and you hovering over the engine compartment squeeze the tubing on and off to adjust the amount of water being sucked into the engine. As the engine begins to bog down a little you will have to rev up the engine with your other hand.
I can't really say it made a difference but it will certainly pass steam through your engine and out your exhaust. Was kind of fun. No engine damage. The SAAB was an 80Turbo.
