Don't be inhibited about saying you don't know something. One of my favorite things about this board is the diversity in the knowledge and skill of the people here. Also, I have inferred from your name that you are one of the few women who stop by here. So, maybe you are free of the socialized expectation that you were supposed to have been born with an innate knowledge of all things automotive. Men reach their ultimate maturity when then can admit that they don't know something. The first step on this road is asking for directions. I'll let you know how that feels when I get there.
Pop the hood. Look at the belt on your left. The round thing on the top, closest to you is the compressor. It is important to try to distinguish a change in pitch from the compressor from a general change in pitch of the motor. If you bend closer to listen, make sure you keep loose clothing and hair away from the belt area.
