I'm a used car dealer specilaizing in imports as well as a Saab owner/lover. We sell a lot of Hondas, Toyotas, Subarus, VWs as well as European cars in the $3,000 to $10,000 range. Let me tell you, the Japanse cars aren't as reliable as you might think--we spend a lot of time and money fixing things on Japanese cars with 80,000 to 140,000 miles on them. Some things are cheaper to repair on the Japanese cars, but the real key is how you take care of them. We've fixed a lot of things on Japanese cars with lower miles that I've yet to fix on my 9000 (which I sold recently) with 145,000 miles. There's a certain amount of "luck of the draw." involved. We recently bought a 94 Toyota Camry (supposedly the epidemy of reliability) with only 107,000 that turned out to need a head gasket. The Saab is still on it's original head gasket. There is no "magic" car brand that never need repairs. A lot of it is simply perception. The next time you hear someone raving about their Honda or Toyota, find out what they're comparing it to, find out what their last car was. Odds are it wasn't a Saab, it was probably something American or Japanese.
