What year is the car?
1986 9000s still had a cable for the speed, but later cars changed over to an electrical sender. Either way, I'm betting that when your mechanic reinstalled the transmission he neglected to connect the speedo pickup. Easy to forget. Hopefully, he didn't forget to disconnect it before removing the transmission, as it's pretty easy to damage.
As for the roar... everything down there is moving, so it could be anything. Stick you head out the window and drive around - see if it's affected by speed, direction of turning, clutch in or out, etc. Plenty of fun diagnosing drivetrain noises. And, with your head out the window, you can make train noises & play locomotive engineer and scare all your neighbors.
