I finally got the bleed job done right (I think), and wanted to to post some notes:
-I had a mechanic check out my hydraulics, he said I have a slave failure, as was suspected. Bleeding the system helped the problem temporarily- for a while I had a perfect-feeling clutch. But alas, with my bad slave, soon the bad pedal returned.
-About master cylinder caps: I ended up using a Volvo cap from the junkyard- they appear to use the same cap. I looked ALL OVER the junkyard for a GM cap that would fit- and couldn't find one. All the GM caps I saw do not have threads, and I don't recommend using them.
-RTV was a great recommendation- without it, it is hard to seal the brass fittings I used to pump fluid trough the hole in my Volvo cap.
-If you are going to do this job, be sure to buy enough dot 4 brake fluid. You may need more than 3 quarts, depending on how long it takes to get all the air & old fluid out of the system.
-My slave bleeder valve was not clogged. The reason I had a very slow bleed at first was I didn't open the valve quite enough, after about another half-turn, it flowed fine.
