Huh? Why is changing springs first "a signature of inadequate knowledge?" I'd love to hear your explanation for that. Quite honestly, four 9000s later, I can't imagine any scenario where a reasonably performing ride involves the use of stock springs at all - they weren't tuned for anything other than a soft ride, and 14 years later they're barely adequate for that.
One would assume the end goal of suspension tuning involves a more controlled ride, and a lower stance - the stock 9000's 32' of ground clearance is hardly confidence-inspiring. Given that, I would absolutely buy springs first to determine what is actually needed from a shock or strut. Dropping a bunch of hard-earned cash on Konis is great if you're rich, but why spend the extra money if Bilsteins (or some other brand) will do the job? Doesn't make sense to me.
