I **think** you have to remove the intermidate bearing, but if the problem is tripod its probably no there. I think this b/c there is really no room for the portion of the axle from tranny to intermiate bearing to slide out to. So checking the part of the axle that connects to the intermidiate bearing, the spines on the wheel bearing and Cv on passanger should be ok for the pass side (of course, assuming that the intermidiate bearing itself is not suspect) As for the driver's side checking the HUB, CV, and the tripod is also adequate. I would guess you are looking for metal shavings and/or rips in the rubber boots.
Even checking these things does not reveal the problem it will give you informantion about what can be eliminated as the culprit...
